In my work with individuals with severe mental illnesses, I often come across people who feel so poorly that they simply don't take care of themselves. While talking to someone about their cleanliness and hygiene can be awkward, we often found that by helping people take the basic steps to "looking" better actually made a significant difference in their mood and wellbeing. Many would say, "Thank you, I do feel a little better since doing that." From the outside, I could also see a bit of a spring in their step and they held their head a little higher.
Beauty Becomes You Foundation has applied this principle of "Its not how you feel, it is how you look." to help seniors with their sometimes complex hygeine issues so that they have a fuller sense of health and wellbeing.
The mission of BBYF is to preserve the dignity and self respect of senior adults through the provision of personal aesthetic care solutions that maintain and improve appearance while lifting self-esteem, building self-confidence and ensuring a strong sense of personal pride.
Founded by Alison O'Neil Andrew in 2005, BBYF provides a variety of basic hygiene programs to the senior community to ensure their health and wellbeing. Often seniors have skin, hair and nail concerns which are easily compromised through denial of their presence and can be exacerbated by medical conditions and lack of proper care.
Many seniors with chronic illnesses have very little 'extra money' left over for luxuries such as a hair cut and color, nail care, or skin care. Subsequently, the inability to have these needed self care services further contributes to isolation, decreased self-esteem, decreased self-worth, and increased depression. Beauty Becomes You Foundation does a lot to increase the quality of life of seniors. Thus it should be no surprise that their motto is: "We're changing the way society looks at seniors."
